TRIUMF is Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics
research and related sciences. Located on the south campus of the
University of British Columbia, TRIUMF is a world-class laboratory well
respected by the international scientific community. The laboratory is
governed as a joint venture by six full-time member universities and
six associate-member universities, with financing from the federal
government through the National Research Council of Canada. The BC
government provides support for civil infrastructure.
TRIUMF serves a large scientific community, providing scientific and
engineering leadership and support for Canadian scientists working at
home as well as high-profile scientific experiments at laboratories
around the world. TRIUMF facilities provide a first-class research
environment for both domestic and foreign scientists studying
subatomic physics, material science, chemistry, and the life sciences.
TRIUMF's new radioactive ion beam facility is becoming the premiere
facility of its kind in the world for the study of nuclear astrophysics.
TRIUMF is at the vanguard of scientific innovation and discovery,
committed to transferring advanced technical developments and skills to
industry for the benefit of the general public. Scientists at TRIUMF participate in
developing new radiopharmaceuticals, microchips, computer software,
original new designs for small cyclotrons, remote-controlled equipment,
analysis of mineral samples, and many other high-tech innovations, like the
superconducting accelerating cavities produced by a collaboration with the Legnaro
laboratory in Italy and manufactured by the Italian company Zanon.
TRIUMF's scientists innovations offer an opportunity for
commercialization outside the basic research environment.
The fascinating science and engineering program at TRIUMF is a natural
magnet for students. The TRIUMF Outreach Program is continually
developing educational programs targeted to high school students as
well as their teachers, undergraduate and graduate university students, and the
general public. TRIUMF is partnered with science promotion agencies
across Canada working to bring the excitement and benefits of
scientific research to the public.
