02 Jul “Old friends – new opportunities”
The slogan chosen by the Embassy of Canada in Italy to celebrate Canada Day in Rome nicely sums up the desire to strengthen political and economic relations between the two countries
“Have a good Canada Day!”, so, June 27, there was the greeting of the Ambassador of Canada in Italy, Mrs Alexandra Bugailiskis, addressed to the many guests present at the celebration of Canada’s National Day (Fête du Canada) at the evocative location of Villa Grandi, Canadian Ambassador’s residence in Italy.
The Canadian federal statute has set the date of Canada Day in memory of the British North America Act (July 1, 1867) the act that designated the union of the British colonies of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick with the “Province of Canada” (Ontario and Québec) forming a single large nation, Canada.
Canadian Government delegation in Italy, organized a reception attended by institutional leaders, jurists and personalities from the business world that operate in relations between Italy and Canada, such as the Hon. Ettore Rosato, vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies, the Hon. Francesca La Marca, Deputy Member- of Italian Parliament-North and Central America Division, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (former Italian Ambassador in Canada), the Ambassador of Mexico in Italy, Juan Jose Guerra Abud, Ambassador Attilio Massimo Iannucci, creating networking opportunities useful for ever deeper knowledge between these two countries.
Guests are entertained not only by institutional greetings, but also by music, food and a short import game with a possibility to win a trip to Canada offered by Air Canada. On this occasion (in addition to the National Day of Québec), Air Canada, represented by the general manager Italy, Stefano Casaregola, was the main sponsor of the event, followed by the Centro Studi Italia-Canada with the presence of the Director Paolo Quattrocchi, the Studio Lombardi, Air Transat (represented in Italy by Tiziana Della Serra) which celebrates 30 years of activity on the airport of Rome Fiumicino and McCain, the latter on Canada Day in Rome with a representative stand and a range of services.
As stated by Ambassador Mrs Bugailiskis, ≪I can’t wait to start working with the new Italian executive to define a common line≫ and as recalled by Jan Scazighino, Trade Commissioner at the Embassy of Canada in Italy, ≪this is an important moment for the relations between these two countries, a moment when the already existing relationship must be strengthened≫. The Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) and the economic and trade agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union, today represent the potential continuation of a relationship with ancient roots but with today’s results.
