ABOUT DR. ILARIA CAPUA

Dr. Ilaria Capua, DVM, PhD is an internationally renowned veterinarian, virologist, best known for her research on influenza viruses, particularly avian influenza, and her efforts promoting open access to genetic information on emerging viruses as part of pre-pandemic preparedness efforts. Dr. Ilaria Capua was elected to the Italian Parliament in 2013 where she held the position of Vice President of the Science, Culture and Education Commission.

During her time in politics she created Parliamentary resolutions and amendments relating to infectious diseases, including antimicrobial resistance, epidemic threats (Ebola), and emerging pathogens of plants and animals.

DR. ILARIA CAPUA

She later resigned and moved to the United States with her family to lead the University of Florida’s One Health Center of Excellence, a center that promotes health advancement as an integrated system through interdisciplinary approaches.

AWARDS

In 2007 she was among the winners of the Scientific American 50 award and in 2008 she was included among Seed’s Revolutionary Minds series for her leadership in science policy for promoting the sharing of information at an international level. She received the most prestigious award in veterinary medicine, the Penn World Leadership in Animal Health award in 2011 and the R.F. Gordon Memorial Medal in 2012.
